The cost of an adventurous childhood? Priceless. This is Cesarito, the son of a young couple who started with EF, and who now work with the program. I arrived yesterday in Monterrey and stayed with Heidy, her husband, and their son in their home, right next to @climbingborders' target neighborhood, where EF focuses their laser of social work using climbing, therapy and education. We went to look for an early participant who hadn't stayed in the program, and we found him. Drugged up, squatting in the dark, he was on the usual park steps where kids buy paint thinner. We told him to get clean so he could climb with us, and today he admitted to me that he couldn't stay clean. He's 17. As I reconnect with the youth of the climbing program @climbingborders, it's eye-opening and terrifying to see the divergence in the path between those who we've managed to keep consistently in the social program, and those who were already too deep in the shadows to see a way out. Each time I come back, there's another death or teen pregnancy; the injustice of their arbitrary hardships supercharges me with anger. But these personal experiences are meaningful; it fuels the countless hours I spend strapped to a computer, working on my own non-profit @climbingwithoutborders to help programs like this one in the Americas, and bring climbers into the fold of changing the world for the better. In the meantime, we just do what we can: and I that journey with like-minded folks... Thanks to Cesar's mom for learning to haul and jug "bigwall style" today 鉂わ笍 It was a pretty cool experience.
So stoked on the pull of donations at @bouldersportsrecycler! Thank you everyone who has donated to @climbingborders through my non-profit CWB by dropping or shipping gear! I'm in transit to Monterrey, Mexico now with a load of shoes, donated bigwall gear, and some radios from @rockytalkies (who were kind enough to also give me a ride to the airport!). Thanks to BSR for throwing shop gear in, all the time. Also thanks to my parents for not judging my nomadic living-out-of-a-backpack habits, and sponsors (for enabling them) with product where it counts >> @niteize @madrockclimbing @pebblewrestlercollective @honeystinger @monkeyhands_climbing WOOO! Time to bring our mentors vertical camping! And by the way, only @pacificedgeclimbinggym has members cool enough that they assume someone will use a donated handmade belay seat. 馃馃 #definedbypassion
Looking for informative, personal training to level up as a climber, or athlete? To recover, prevent injuries, or kick ass? @bodyenroute (Joslynn) is a certified strength training coach that works with injury prevention, recovery, and goal-oriented personal training to help climbers and a broad spectrum of athletes to perform at their best. I've been blown away by her openness to share knowledge, kick ideas around, and work towards dreams seemingly effortlessly. If you're looking for a way to improve as an athlete, or a stronger and more body-educated human being, check out her website, and shoot her a message. Her monthly training fee is also (to me) very affordably low, so connect with Joslynn before her schedule fills up! And if you like podcasts, check out the last two she's had, one with the entertaining Kris Odub Hampton. More info over at her IG 鉂わ笍
